Job Summary:

The UW-Madison Dance Department seeks a colleague to develop and teach courses in ballet at all levels. The successful candidate will have experience teaching ballet and expertise in one of the areas of Contemporary Dance, Screendance, Dance Studies, Composition, Movement Analysis, and/or Ethnic Dance Practices. We are looking for a colleague with experiences supporting students from diverse backgrounds to learn, grow, and succeed in our department's academic and artistic environment. The position comes with ample opportunity to develop connections and collaborate on projects and events across campus and within the local, regional, and state communities.

The UW-Madison Dance Department is a leader and innovator in the field of dance. Our institution was the first in the nation to establish a dance degree program in higher education. It was here, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in 1926, under the leadership of dance pioneer Margaret H'Doubler, that dance became a rigorous academic discipline, and the body became the route to scientific inquiry, self-discovery, creativity, and citizenship. Our department and its world-class faculty and professional staff are committed to excellence through teaching and research, and we strive to impact the world within and outside of the university, through the Wisconsin Idea, with the aim to improve people's lives through dance. In addition to our BFA and BS degree programs in dance, the department offers five certificates (Dance, Dance Studies, Dance Movement Therapy, Pilates and Dance Education), brings elective dance courses to hundreds of students each semester, and welcomes pre-collegiate students to campus for summer intensive study and dance festivals. We also produce several concerts and host internationally renowned guest artists each academic year. Our dedicated dance space--the beautifully renovated historic Lathrop Hall--is located in the heart of UW-Madison, near Lake Mendota, the state capitol, and downtown Madison. Our facility includes five spacious dance studios, a Pilates equipment lab, and the H'Doubler Performance Space, a 240-seat proscenium theater.

Responsibilities:

Principal Duties:

Teaching: Develop and teach ballet thesis and technique courses at all levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and at least one other dance style, such as contemporary, jazz, tap, or urban/social dance. Other assignments could include instruction in composition, improvisation, repertory, movement analysis, somatic, dance history, dance studies, and other movement practices. Additional responsibilities include contributing to the development of the department's ballet curriculum and programs.

Research: Develop and maintain distinctive and focused creative research on choreography and/or performance in ballet, with demonstrated national recognition.

Service: Active engagement and participation in faculty governance, community building, and the academic, administrative, and artistic functioning of the department.

Qualifications:

Minimum Years and Types of Work Experience:
Candidates must have a Dance MFA or PhD degree in Dance or a related field
Provide evidence of having created and presented ballet productions
Have a minimum of two years teaching at the university level (preferred)
Provide evidence of successful application for external grants (preferred)
Document experience in community-engaged arts practices or education (preferred)
Demonstrate experience in new course development
