This past week 1st and 3rd year Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) students visited Brussels and Paris to visit various European Union and United Nations institutions as well as Sorbonne University. On the first leg of our trip we were able to visit the European Union External Action Service, the Permanent Representation of Spain in the European Union (REPER) where we meet with four officials who gave us insight into their diplomatic duties and employment opportunities. The second day we visited the Press Club of the Belgium Capital where former University of Navarra students gave us testaments on their personal work journeys and finally the European Parliament where we met with two representatives of the Socialist and Conservative groups. On the second leg of our trip we moved to Paris where we met with a representative of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD - OCDE) at the Institute of Intercultural Communication and Management (ISIT) and met with a former UNAV student working at the European Banking Authority . Our final day we meet with two former CEOs of AXA Insurance and TOTAL Energies, followed by a guided visit of UNESCO headquarters and finalizing our day and trip visiting Sorbonne University receiving a class on “Human Rights: Past, Present and Future”. It was truly a unique experience and an eye opener to the true working of the European Union and how us students, as our time nears to join the “real world”, to understand and prepare for the world we will inherit. #unav #eu #unesco #europeanparliament #humanrights

Our #EUSchumanChallenge winners took full advantage of their time in #Brussels 🇧🇪 to experience the inner workings of the EU ⚙️🇪🇺. Here's what Mathew Yiu Chung Ho, from The University of British Columbia, told us about his thrilling experience:“The Schuman Challenge study tour has allowed me to further understand the interconnected nature of the different structures within the EU, from the European Parliament to the European Commission and its various Directorate Generals; and from the European Economic and Social Committee and European External Action Service to the Canadian Mission to the EU.Meeting the people behind many of these EU institutions has not only taught me how decisions are made and executed within the EU, but it has also shown me how they influence relationships with countries such as Canada. A great example is the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This was my first time in Europe, so it was eye-opening to meet so many different people from different parts of the continent in this microcosm of the EU.”Patrick Ferreira, from University of Victoria, said this about his adventure in Brussels:“The Schuman Challenge study trip was an extremely positive and formative opportunity to familiarize myself with EU institutions. Meeting a variety of different teams and policymakers from many directorates was both informative and instructive. It helped me gain a better understanding of how the EU functions, which areas of policy it has jurisdiction over, and its relationship and understanding of Canada as an important ally. This is a tailor-made study trip for anyone with an interest in public administration, political science and policymaking. The chance to visit Europe was a tremendously gratifying cultural experience for me. Encountering European culture in the highly multilingual and multicultural city of Brussels was a constantly fascinating and novel adventure. Experiencing European architecture, art, food and languages was a life-changing experience for me, as someone who has spent his whole life living in North America. I would highly recommend the experience to anyone interested in experiencing and learning about different cultures around the world.”#EuropeanUnion #EUInCanada #StudyTrip #EUForeignPolicy

--- Experiences from our students ---To give some more attention to our great students, we interviewed some, which will be shared over the next few weeks! Today, we asked Géraldine Paschen, a final-year student currently partaking in our dual-degree programme with Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome, regarding her encounters within our master's programme. What motivated you to choose this master's programme? This Master programme appealed to me, as it combines theoretical and practical classes. It is also rather small-scale, which ensures a personal relationship with professors and peers. Can you share a highlight or memorable experience from your time in the programme The excursion to Brussels and Luxembourg are definitely memorable experiences but academically, courses with political negotiation simulations or the moot court were my top highlights. How have the faculty and instructors supported your academic and professional growth? The familiar nature of the SCEUS and the environment created there encourages close relationships to professors and one receives valuable feedback and profits from first-hand experience in academia and professional life. What advice would you give to prospective students considering enrolling in this master's programme? I would encourage new students to take advantage of the professional and academic experience around them and to take a look at other faculties, such as the political science faculty, for their free electives. Some of the courses offered during summer or winter semester are truly special and focused on specific topics. This is also a great opportunity to find a potential Master thesis topic. Also, take a look at the Double-Degree Programmes if you fancy to have another experience abroad. Can you share a specific project or assignment that challenged you and helped you grow academically or professionally? EU External Relations was arguably my favourite course. I enjoyed the negotiation simulations and the preparatory work needed to represent France. The learning curve experienced between the first and last simulation was incredible to realise how one grows with the tasks. How have you been able to balance your academic workload with other commitments outside of the programme? Sport is a good way to balance and rewind and I can only recommend to have a look at the USI (Unisport) programme, as it also provides opportunities to get to know real Salzburg citizens. Another interesting activity I can recommend is to start a language course at the Afro-Asiatisches Institut, where you can learn languages. I did Arabic and it was a nice way to relax (no pressure as it is not academic) while learning something useful.

🎓 I am thrilled to announce that I have graduated with a Master’s degree in World Politics and International Relations from Università di Pavia. This incredible journey has been filled with remarkable experiences, including an Erasmus semester in Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg, and a formative internship in Civil Liberties Union for Europe. These experiences not only enriched my academic knowledge but also provided me with practical insights into European governance and policy-making.My thesis focused on "The Influence of EU Conditionality on the Democratisation Patterns of Candidate Countries in the Western Balkans: The Case of Albania and Serbia." The research highlighted that EU conditionality, while fostering certain reforms, also encounters significant challenges in fully achieving democratization. The findings underscore the necessity for the EU to adopt more nuanced strategies to effectively support democratic governance and legal frameworks in these countries. As I close this chapter, I am eager to apply my knowledge and experiences to further my career in the political field, aiming to contribute to meaningful change and effective governance.Thank you to everyone who supported me throughout this academic adventure. Here’s to the next chapter! 🌍👩🎓#MastersDegree #Graduation #PoliticalScience #EuropeanUnion #InternationalRelations #Albania #Serbia

Last month I finished my Erasmus exchange semester at Università degli Studi di Padova. For five months, I got to enjoy studying and living alongside Italian students and other internationals in Padova. I completed 30 ECTS and followed different courses at the Department of Political Sciences, Law and International Studies. The courses I followed were taught in English and were attended by a great diversity of international students as well as Italian students. With my field of study focussed on international issues, it was a valuable experience to work together with so many international students and to get exposed to new international points of view.I especially enjoyed the course ‘Economic Globalization and Human Rights’. It was about the social and economic impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) and the involvement of multi-national enterprises in global value chains. I learned how to examine FDI activities more critically, in particular related to corporate social responsibility and human rights violations in host countries. Deepening my understanding on certain topics like this was exactly what I wanted to learn during my exchange. In my free time I explored much of northern Italy together with new friends and I spent many weekends hiking in the beautiful Italian Alps. It was wonderful to study at such a historic university and to live in such a pretty and lively city as Padova. This exchange was an exciting experience that has got me looking forward to future opportunities abroad! Now, I am excited to be back at to start the last semester of my bachelor’s degree in International Development Studies. #erasmus #exchange #politicalscience #internationalstudies
