LOCAL MEN WHO TACKLED THE BIG RALLY Two local competitors who took part in the Monte Carlo Rally experienced some trouble with their cars but both had otherwise successful trips. Mr. Richard Davis, of Leigh Farm, Pensford, driving Sunbeam was placed 89th in the lists after reaching Monte Carlo and thus just qualified to take part in the final mountain circuit reserved for the first 90 cars. Earlier on the trip he and his companions, Mr. Jan Lewis, of Stoke Bishop, and Mr.
Julian Flook, of Kingswood, had successfully effected a temporary repair to the car's dynamo which had come loose, but in the mountain circuit the dynamo again became loose and spoilt their chances of higher place. MOUNTAIN CIRCUIT Only 69 of the 90 cars completed the mountain circuit and Mr. Davis was 66th. The other local competitor. Mr.
Maurice Davies, of Norton House. fidsomer Norton, drove Ford. accompanied by Mr. Norman P. Taylor, of The Post Omce Stores.
lidsomer Norton, and Mr. Michael Britton, of Buckfastleigh, Devon. They were placed 96th, tying with a D.K.W. from Stockholm, and missing a place in the final 90 by only 24 seconds. So close was the timing in this year's rally that there were only 31 minutes between them and the eventual winner.
Mr. Davies was 28th among the British competitors and 11th of the Glasgow starters. It was at Glasgow that their trouble later on the road originated. Mr. Davies drove to Scotland on normal tubeless tyres and then had Swiss snow tyres fitted to the back wheels.
But the garage, thinking nese, too, were tubeless tyres, failed to nt. inner tubes. The tyres held up until they were heading for Strasbourg when one tyre blew off. Delay in changing a wheel, and trying to obtain tubes later Paris cost them so much time that for two days they were unable to stop long enough to have a proper After holding their time despite this trouble, fog and darkness between Chambery and Grenoble caused delays they were unable to make up, but they ended in a far better position than last year's 244th.
