About

The University of Tennessee (formally known as UT Knoxville, UTK, or UT) is a public land-grant research university in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is the flagship site of the UT system and was established in 1794. A significant number of academic and student research opportunities are made possible through the university’s connections to the adjacent Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which was created under President Andrew Holt of the university and maintained via the Battelle cooperation. UT is the only college in the country with three editing projects for presidential papers. James M. Buchanan, one of its alumni, was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Economics. Nine of its graduates have also been chosen as Rhodes Scholars. The university is the oldest secular institution west of the Eastern Continental Divide and one of the nation's oldest institutions. It is also categorized as one of the "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity" institutions.
